Office of the President

The Rev. John Arthur Nunes, PhD

Dear Friends,

Every new academic year brings a time of heightened emotions: excitement, anticipation, joy in reuniting and the promise of new beginnings.

We all know that this 2020/2021 academic year will be layered with more. More guidelines, more rules, more worry, more distraction.

I like to try to think about the other ‘mores’ this unprecedented time has given us. More ways to serve. More ways to look at our former assumptions about life. More ways to show we care: by wearing our masks and keeping our distance, for instance.

This fall, my book Meant for More will be published. Meant for More is also the college theme for this academic year. Together, the Concordia community will explore ways of engaging with the world that may help us discover our meaningfulness in it: the more for which we are meant.

The more I live, the more I realize how much I don’t know. My charge to you this academic year is to find something you love learning about; get curious about it yourself. Don’t rely on someone else, such as a teacher. As a famous saying goes, “Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.”

Best of blessings in Jesus Christ,

The Rev. John Arthur Nunes, PhD
